Blog # 7 for Week 8, Homework and Deliverables for Final...

1) For the Blog: Podcasting. Find some articles and tutorials on podcasting and be prepared to work in class on creating a podcast. The subject of your podcast can be whatever you like, but perhaps an advertisement or presentation of material related to your final project would be useful. Remember the website I recommended earlier this quarter: http://studio.odeo.com/create/home

2) To turn in to drop off at top of next class: Read this article,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercultural_communication_principles
Cross – cultural communication principles described

Then answer these questions in 1-2 short paragraphs

A. Which of the tips for improving cross-cultural communication do you perceive to be a potential threat to our structured design process in sound design?

B. Describe a potential worst-case scenario involving this issue in your class project.

3) For the delivery of all your exercises and projects for the end of the quarter you will need to prepare the following:

• A course portfolio in 11” x 17” format, any visual elements to your work should go here; audio color wheel, any charts or graphs you create, artwork for CD packaging, game box covers, etc. For Game Artists: Include your game document here, but lay it out in 11 x 17 for portfolio. For IMD: include a graphic representation of your ambient audio environment. For Animation: Include storyboards. You do not need to buy a plastic portfolio for this, just bring me the 11 x 17 COLOR prints paper-clipped together. No staples.

• Final CD: Two (2) copies of all of your audio exercises and projects on disk. Make sure that they are organized and track-listed with cover art and are in a universal mpg format. Both the CDs and the 11 x17 pages are for archival purposes as well as for grading and will not be returned to you.

4) Remix Planet: Bring in for presentation to the class your two remixed/cut and paste exercises.

A. A song created by you by sampling the work of others, perhaps 3 to 4 song samples mixed together. Soundtrack Pro is good for this project, but you are free to use any PC program that you wish.
B. A remix of four sound effects that when combined are not recognizable as the originals.

• Make sure to bring all sample originals so we can compare.

Other useful information:
Some basic laws you SHOULD know (read, midterm material) from the US copyright office website - http://www.copyright.gov/

1. http://www.copyright.gov/register/sound.html - how to register sound recordings

2. http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap11.html - Sound Recordings and Music Videos

3. http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap10.html - Digital Audio Recording Devices and Media (too long, know the sections, and have an idea what they talk about.)

Thanks and off you go.

I went to the Odeo website several weeks ago, made an account in like 2 minutes, and deleted it less then 15 minutes thereafter. xD!!

Well, I just recreated an account there after doing some research on what podcasting is exactly and what it consists of, and then I remembered why I deleted my Odeo account back then---Because you can't upload your own audio to that site. -__-;; They do give you the option to take the URL from a pre-existing mp3 file on the internet and call it your own, but that's kinda useless.

As I understand it, Odeo forces you to record directly on their site using a microphone (which I don't have) on your computer and their built-in recording program. I made a recording just now (which was a recording of silence since I don't have a mic) to see if they offered any editing tools (since they weren't shown at the recording screen), but still there was nothing there.

I think it would be best to just record your stuff yourself on your computer and then host it on another site that actually lets you host your podcast you make somewhere else. By doing it this way, you can add a music bed and/or sound effects to your podcast that you would otherwise be unable to do during your initial recording.

Check out this video that this dude made on how to create a podcast, get it advertised (err, meta-tagged) and stuff like that.

Horse Turds... I mean, CLICK ME!!!

The video suggests using MyPodcast.com to upload your podcast. Once you make an account and want to "create an episode," you're given the option to browse your computer for your file. I think you can also record directly to that site (as you can with Odeo) if you so desire. Oh yea, and it's free. The only thing I found bad about this site is that it says the upload form is "temorarily not supported by IE6 and Safari 2.x," which poses a little problem. hehehe. I for one am an IE-whore, and I love my IE6 (and have made the concious decision not to update to IE7 cuz the button placement sucks), but everything should be fine because (A.) the macs in our class don't have IE, and (B.) regardless of what version of Safari we have, we can still use FireFox.

The only think I'm kinda confused about is what exactly that RSS feed thing is, but I've heard about it several times before. All I (think I) know is that it's something that lets you see information from sites you choose without having to actually go do the websites themselves. Anyway, it should be simple enough.

I am uncertain as to what we have to post for this blog, but i did however, find a group of tutorials that talked about how to go about making a podcast, as well as the programs and websites that can be used.

If you want my tutorials they are very simple and walk you through every single step as to how one goes about creating a podcast in Audacity.

Tutorials: (note, there are four for one tutorial)

Yes just blogging about what you find and posting links is good. You will get the opportunity in class to use the best tutorials that you and your classmates find to begin your own podcast.

ALright i guess i'll start off by giving a deffinition of what podcasting is from wikipedia. A podcast is a series of media files which are distributed over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable devices and computers. Podcasting first became popular with people who wanted to make their own radio shows but then got used in many different ways one way it can be used is by schools which use them to allow students and teachers to communicate with each other by having a student download the podcast of the lesson if he was absent.
One of the advantages of podcasting is you get to listen to what you want when you want.
I then looked up some tutorials.
Heres a couple of sites i found. http://www.podcast411.com/page5.html

"A podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The term podcast, like broadcast, can refer either to the series of content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also called podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster."(Wikipedia) uhh so like we are supposed to make these podcasts and become podcasters, i suppose for my game i could do a trailer or something like a video showing cinematic clips. Here are some tutorials and websites about it.

Ok so I pretty much have no idea what a podcast is or how to make one. I checked out wikipedia and it did not explain it well at all. Every time I come across and explanation they explain in a bunch of internet-speak I don't understand! So anyway, I did what seems to be the smart thing to do when you wanna learn how to do something and that is, go to youtube! (srsly, i learned how to gut a fish on there, it was awesome)

So here's the vid I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrIO9n7JNYU

It still uses some internet-speak but it's funny so w/e. As far as I have gathered from this video tho, it's a recording of either video or sound? and it's like saved a special way and you have to upload it on a special podcast website? amidoinitrite?

Here is a couple of websites that I read through and found helpful/interesting.

http://maczealots.com/articles/podcasting/

Was the site that helped me find out what a pod-cast even is.

The best line from that article was as follows:

"Simply put, podcasting is TiVo for your iPod. Using an RSS aggregator or podcatching client, you can subscribe to online radio shows that will automatically download into iTunes and sync with your iPod. This allows you to have fresh content on your iPod all the time."

http://www.podcastingnews.com/

Has many articles and blogs about Podcasts.

Has a very descriptive podcast tutorial.

Podcasts are the latest developments in digital audio broadcasting. Some shows are professionally created by media outlets, such as Disney and ABC News, and others are produced by creative individuals with a microphone and a smidge of know-how. You can listen to anything from the latest sports news from ESPN to a group of random women dishing about pop culture on their girls' night in. Why, (shameless plug alert) you can even listen to technology news via the new, weekly Digital Trends Podcast.

http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/guide/31/how-to-make-a-podcast

So I found a website that tells you how to make your first podcast. That link is:

http://www.podcastingnews.com/articles/How-to-Podcast.html

It seems a little weird to me podcasts. Basically they are just recordings of people talking about whatever they want to talk about. That can get a little boring. How do you make a podcast that everyone will enjoy and how do you keep the material going strong and not drag on and on. The rest for making it is easy. YOu just make it an mp3.

I LOVE podcasts! A user being able to find a specific topics of interests to listen to, when they want to listen to it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I am currently subscribed to roughly 26 podcasts. Most of them are of the video variety. What I have is essentially my own TV station that only broadcasts the shows that I hand pick to watch, exactly when I choose to watch them. The freedom of the consumer is in full force in the podcasting/internet TV model.
The very specific, often niche, programming the medium provides also allows advertisers to more selectively target specific target demographics. It allows advertisers to include ads that are more enticing to the people it reaches without it potentially flying over the heads of others if it were broadcast to the masses rather than specific watchers/listeners.
